Services Offered By Welland Medical Practice

Child Health Surveillance

A full child health and immunisation service is available to all children under five. Appointments are sent out via the Child Health Department computer system so please ensure you notify your health visitor or reception of any changes of address etc.

PLEASE ENSURE YOU ATTEND THESE APPOINTMENTS TO ENSURE YOUR CHILD IS IMMUNISED AND PROTECTED.

Vaccinations and Immunisations

The practice regards the protection from disease by immunisation, particularly of children, as one of its highest priorities. Information about you or your child’s immunisation requirements can be obtained from reception or from your health visitor.

If you or your child has missed an immunisation that is normally offered in childhood, please consider a catch-up vaccination. Measles, rubella and whooping cough continue to cause a problem in our area, protect yourself. Get immunised. We would like to be flexible in offering an appointment time for vaccination that suits you. Please discuss this with the receptionist.

Travel Advice and Vaccinations

The nurse is able to give a wide range of travel health advice as well as the necessary travel vaccinations. Please make an appointment to see the nurse at least eight weeks before you intend to leave the country. Cervical Smear Tests

The practice operates a call and recall service for women aged 25 to 65. They will be sent an invitation to have a smear every three years (ages 25 - 50) or every five years (ages 50 - 65). Please tell the receptionist if you are coming for a smear so that enough time can be given.

NHS Health Checks (MOT Clinic)

The NHS Health Checks are provided by the practice nurses to all patients aged 40-74 years old and who are not suffering from Kidney Disease, Diabetes, Heart Disease and had a stroke as the patients are already monitored at least annually. This Health Check provides the opportunity for both men and women to have a general health check and simple blood test.

Sexual Health and Contraceptive Services

These services are tailored to all ages, genders and sexual preferences. We aim to provide a free, confidential and holistic approach to sexual health and contraceptive needs. We offer:
1.Sexual health check including screening for sexually transmitted infections and HIV testing
2. Confidential contraceptive advice and supply
3. Health promotion, pregnancy testing and services including referral for termination of pregnancy
4. Confidential support and advice for the under 16s
5. Chlamydia screening for patients aged 15 to 25.

Minor Surgery

Minor surgery is carried out at the surgery to help save long waits for hospital treatment. This can be arranged by speaking to your doctor.

Asthma, Diabetic, Heart and Blood Pressure Clinics

The practice holds regular clinics for the management of patients suffering from asthma, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. All aspects of these complex conditions are monitored. Appropriate advice and treatment are given where problems arise and referral to specialists will be arranged when required. The clinics are run by the practice nurses in conjunction with the doctors. Ask at reception for an appointment if you have been diagnosed as suffering from any of these problems.

Counselling

Referrals can be made by the doctor to a trained counsellor when required.

Non-NHS Services

The NHS remit does not cover certain services and consequently your doctor is entitled to make a charge in line with the BMA scale of fees to cover the costs of providing a particular service. Such might include certain medical examinations e.g. HGV licence, employment medicals, driving insurance etc, as well as certain certificates e.g. private medical insurance claims, private sick notes, holiday cancellation etc.
A list of private fees is available at reception.

Preventative Medicine
• Don’t smoke (none of your doctors smokes).

• Don’t get overweight.

• Take regular exercise.

• Drink only in moderation.

• Don’t ignore unexplained bleeding, weight loss or breast lumps.

Screening Test

We recommend the following regular check-ups:
• Cervical smears for ladies aged 25-64 at three/five yearly intervals.

• Immunisation and developmental checks for babies.

• Blood pressure checks at least every three years for men and women between the ages of 16 and 65.

Pharmacy First

Pharmacy First is a scheme which allows a patient access to advice and medication for certain minor ailments without having to wait for a doctor’s appointment. If a patient is exempt from prescription charges this rule will apply to any medication issued by the pharmacist. Patients must register for the scheme at the surgery prior to visiting the pharmacy.

Patients Over 75 Years of Age

If you are 75 or over, you should be seen annually either by your doctor, practice nurse, district nurse or health visitor. This can be arranged at the surgery or, if that is not possible, a home visit will be arranged.

Flu Vaccination

This is particularly recommended for patients with heart, lung or kidney disease, diabetes, and residents of nursing and rest homes. Please contact the reception staff in September for details of the vaccination dates and to make an appointment. If you are unable to attend the surgery, a home visit can be arranged.

Appointments

The practice offers online booking up to 20 days in advance, to register for this service please come into the surgery where staff will be pleased to organise your PIN and Access Id issued on a printed letter or you can email CAPCCG.WellandMP@nhs.net FAO: Practice Manager to request registration for online service your username and password will be emailed back to you, once set up you will have access to booking or cancelling appointments, repeat prescriptions 24 hours a day.
